Google have been busy rolling out a few navigational tests over the last few days with a few variants of the top navigation bar. A few days ago I was seeing a greyed out navigation bar, now I’m consistently seeing the top navigation bar in black.
To my amazement I’m puzzled by Google’s decision to use a design with such little contrast between the elements. It doesn’t pass the W3C’s contrast ratio specifications failing the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. In fact, not only do Google actively promote an accessible web, Google’s own Loretta Guarino Reid serves as the Co-Chair for the WCAG Working Group and is one of the editors of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0
If you’re looking to test the contrast and colour differences on your site, I recommend Jonathan Snook’s contrast checker tool.
